Interview with a sex worker

Sexworker was stuck in an office job she hated four years ago. She wanted to go back to school and change careers but didn’t want to take out a huge student loan or turn to her parents for support. So she responded to an escort agency ad and has been doing sex work ever since, while continuing her post-secondary education.

Worried about the law?

“The laws are quite vague and confusing, so I was paranoid until I realized that the risk of getting caught and charged wasn’t actually that high.”

Police run-ins?

“There were three or four agencies working out of one hotel. After the police went in to talk to one of them, everyone moved out of the building, but no charges were ever laid.”

Would new laws alter public perceptions?

“Sex is a touchy subject. A lot of people think you shouldn’t be able to buy it. They’ve never meet a girl who’s okay with having sex for money so she can buy a house or get herself through school. All they see is someone being exploited.”

Do you feel safe?

“I work at a nice agency, and no one ever gets mistreated they know we make the money for them. In Toronto, the escort scene is fairly self-regulated. The people who run the agencies all know each other, and they’re pretty proactive about johns who fuck around. The community takes care of itself.”
