Juno Cup!

Can’t say that Calgary is exactly gripped by Juno fever yet. Ever since the Junos took their show on the road and escaped an ambivalent Toronto, the Canadian music industry invasion of relatively smaller towns has ignited a bit of a frenzy in each Burg they occupied.

Last year Saskatoon was convulsed with Juno Fever and even as we arrived in the airport crazed autograph hungry fans jostled with performing musicians for floor space in the arrivals area.

Not so in Calgary but they may all change tonight at the Juno Cup Game, which I play in as a member of the Rockers Teams (Historical note – I scored the first ever Juno Cup Game goal in Edmonton a few years ago – and as stay-at-home defenseman I almost never score). Last night the Rockers and the ex-NHLers – they prefer Alumni — had a combined teams shinny game/practice. I was teamed with ex-Leaf and Flame Jamie MacCoun on the D and it was fun to hit Doug Gilmour with break out passes as we busted out of our zone. Paul Coffey kept a few Rockers after the skate for some skills development – priceless. The NHLers trash talk at a joint team dinner last night was nastier than in the past so I have a feeling they are tiring of toying with us and we may have our asses handed to us tonight.
