Games boycott hits Russia where it hurts

Regarding Susan G. Cole On Why We Shouldn’t Boycott The Sochi Olympics (NOW, August 15-21). Hmm, what sends a better message? Boycotting something that a bazillion people watch? Or hoping that a few brave athletes will risk wearing a ribbon rainbow pin?

I’d rather have a reporter say that Canada is not competing in the Sochi Olympics because of Russia’s homophobic laws. More people will hear that from their sofas.

Sorry, NOW. The safety of LGBTQ folk before, during and after is more important than a few news stories about brave athletes.

A boycott of the Winter Games is highly unlikely, but we still should call for it. It continues the discussion and hits Russia where it hurts.

Let’s all be gay for Winter Games

Remember the scene in the movie Spartacus where the Roman asks the assembled captive slaves, “Who among you is Spartacus?” And slowly, one after another, each of the slaves stands up to say “I am Spartacus”?

Well, if we can all be Edward Snowden and Bradley Manning, then I suggest for Sochi 2014 that we and all the athletes can all be gay.

Take that, Russia!

Bike lanes puzzle on Queens Quay

Regarding Queens Quay Road Test, by Jacob Scheier (NOW, August 15-21). I just rode the Queens Quay detour along the old trail from Spadina to near Bay. The detour signs are huge, and there are pavement markings, too. This old trail is better than the nothing we get at other construction sites along Front.

It’s also a reminder of how bad we’ve had it and how great the new Martin Goodman Trail will be. Construction is taking long enough, yes, but there never was a bike lane on this part of Queens Quay to leave open anyway.

TPA’s noise claims don’t add up

I am confused about the ads run by the Toronto Port Authority in your magazine stating that Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is quieter than local traffic. I was just walking on Queens Quay West, and the run-up from a plane was a conversation stopper. Couldn’t hear anything but the plane.

The number the TPA quotes for the Q400 is 67 decibels. I have seen figures that say that the Q400’s flyover decibel level is 78, lateral it’s 84 and on approach it’s 93.1 decibels.

I live a block south of Lake Shore facing north and I can barely hear Lake Shore and Gardiner traffic.

However, I have had times when the planes are so loud that even facing north and two blocks from the airport, I’ve had to close my balcony doors to hear my TV. TPA’s figures do not add up.

Missed Gostick’s soulful wisdom

Thrilled to see Sheila Gostick back writing her soulful stories (NOW, July 25-August 1). Makes me look forward to more issues with her unique views, which are rare these days.

Calling TCH’s reward a bribe

Regarding TCH Reward Under Fire, by Ben Spurr (NOW, August 16). Wow. I’ve been waiting for four cupboard doors from Toronto Community Housing for two years now. So if I don’t tell on troublemakers in my neighbourhood I won’t get them? LOL.

Forced to rethink Yatim shooting

While I absolutely in no way defend the actions of police officer James Forcillo (NOW, August 8-14) – in fact I find the police’s actions appalling – we must consider the statements of one witness who reportedly told a police officer that a man with a knife tried to kill her.

By-elections last word goes to… engineers

With five provincial by-elections recently (NOW, August 8-14), local chapters of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) reached out to candidates in each of the five. All-candidates meetings were held in four. The goal was to raise awareness of issues that affect regulation of the engineering profession in Ontario. As well, they looked at issues such as energy costs and supply, infrastructure and workplace health and safety.

We are particularly concerned with the current government’s decision to authorize important engineering work in a manufacturing setting without requiring oversight by professional engineers, potentially putting workers at risk.
