bob rae lectured a ryerson jour-nalism class last week on George Orwell, telling students he admires the famous British writer because he was able to describe political reality freed from ideological blinkers."Orwell said, "It's my obligation to tell the truth. I don't care if it makes the left uncomfortable to tell them all their rhetoric doesn't relate to the lives of ordinary people. I've got to tell the truth.'"
When someone strays from Orwell and tells the former premier of Ontario that the left has become irrelevant, students laugh nervously.
But the former premier isn't fazed. "The left has failed to understand how the world has changed for people," he says.
"More and more our economy is about "me,' and the left is still coming up with collectivist solutions that just aren't going to work."
