Local singer dies in coyote attack

Toronto singer-songwriter, Taylor Mitchell, passed away this morning after being attacked by two coyotes yesterday in Cape Breton National Park.

The 19-year-old up-and-coming folk singer, whose recent gig was just this Saturday in New Brunswick, was on a tour of the Maritimes in support of her debut album, For Your Consideration.

NOW reviewed the album back in March, in which music editor Benjamin Boles wrote, “It’s hard to believe that Taylor Mitchell is just 18 years old. Her country-tinged folk pop sounds like it comes from someone of a completely different generation, and her voice has none of the tentative frailty we’d expect from someone her age.”

Taylor was also nominated for Young Performer of the Year at this year’s Canadian Folk Music Awards.

“Words can’t begin to express the sadness and tragedy of losing such a sweet, compassionate, vibrant, and phenomenally talented young woman,” said publicist, Lisa Weitz, in an e-mail.

Taylor was scheduled to perform in Margaretsville. N.S. on Oct. 30. [rssbreak]
