Local trouble

Rating: NNNNN

john honderich’s bow tie mustbe spinning after eight Metroland community papers (all owned by Torstar) backed the Canadian Alliance. The Mirror, Guardian and Bloor West Villager newspapers called the Alliance “the only logical choice for anyone casting a vote to send a message” to the Liberals.

In Toronto-Danforth, the East York Mirror endorsed the local Stockwell Day candidate, as did the North York Mirror in Willowdale and Eglinton-Lawrence. “It states pretty clearly that if you’re not happy with what’s going on with the Liberals then this is what we think you should do,” says editor-in-chief Deborah Bodine.

Not only are they out of touch with the politics of their communities , but the papers are also clearly not in line with the Star’s Liberal mandate. Says Bodine, “We don’t follow the same mandate.”SCOTT ANDERSON
