Local Liberal MP Dennis Mills and Riverdale residents are lining up against a proposal by councillor Jack Layton that would see the city buy the Chester Village nursing home on Broadview to turn it into a 160-bed shelter for homeless families.
Locals weren't impressed when they learned Layton was pushing the plan at council without consulting the neighbourhood. Lillian Adamakis, a director of the Danforth By The Valley Business Improvement Area, says it would support a scaled-down shelter.
"Is this in the best interest of the homeless, of the neighbourhood, of the businesses in the community?" she asks.
Layton now says he wants to defer the plan so there can be community input.
