Magic Piano solo, iPad promo

When the iPod won an endorsement from U2, Apple scored a marketing coup. Now, can a viral video earn the iPad some promotional magic from a classical pianist?

A video has surfaced showing Chinese pianist genius Lang Lang rocking out on the iPad’s Magic Piano app. Designed by Smule, this app was apparently created thanks to Lang Lang’s influence on the designers. The app works on the touchscreen tablet by allowing you to tap laser beams reflecting the tune, similar to Guitar Hero’s system.

At a San Francisco concert, Lang Lang suddenly walks on stage with an iPad. He loads the app and begins playing Flight of the Bumblebees, as the crowd and orchestra laugh at the absurdity of this geekery session.

Let’s just say no one has destroyed it on Magic Piano like Lang Lang did that night. It looked almost effortless. At the 49-second mark, catch Lang Lang getting creative by playing both the iPad and the piano simultaneously. Too bad the camera was shooting from so far away.

Apple gets a symphonic endorsement with this vid, and it’s perfect for iPad early adopters, but don’t think this is another U2 boost. Instead, the app designer Smule should be applauding Lang Lang’s iPad cameo, because Magic Piano’s popularity should enjoy a nice surge with this video.

Now if only someone can merge the hottest two memes of the past three months – iPad apps and piano freestyle Chatroulette.
