The Ontario NDP announced on Saturday that Marit Stiles is the new leader of the party, and in turn the NDP’s candidate for the next premier.

Stiles served as the MPP for Toronto’s Davenport area since 2018 and was also the NDP’s education critic. Prior to that she was the public school trustee for Davenport.

Stiles also made it a point to champion Canada’s arts and culture sectors as the National Director of Research & Bargaining at ACTRA, Canada’s union for broadcast media professionals.

After becoming the official leader today, Stiles said her priority is to defeat Conservative Premier Doug Ford in the next provincial election set for 2026.

“Today, we start the countdown to the end of Doug Ford’s disastrous government, and the beginning of a better, brighter future for Ontario. People are counting us. They are counting on a strong NDP to put forward a positive vision for our province and win more for [the] people, and that work starts right now,” said Stiles during a celebration on Saturday.

New Democrats from across the province and within Toronto joined in celebrating Stiles and are hopeful about her vision for a greater Ontario in the future.
