Russian troops have been in the region since the conclusion of the Winter Games in Sochi. On Monday, the U.S. imposed sanctions on 11 Russian and Ukrainian officials involved in the military incursion in Crimea. Primie Minister Stephen Harper, meanwhile, who is set to visit the Ukraine next week, also announced economic sanctions and travel restrictions on senior Russian and Crimean government officials.

Mark Marczyk, of Juno-nominated Toronto band Lemon Bucket Orkestra, was recently back from the Urkaine and wrote this for NOW Magazine on the struggle for independence from the Russian-backed government.
