Mental health drug claims for Canadians under 30 rose nearly 25 per cent from 2019 to 2021, according to a new report from Sun Life.

The financial services agency released its Designed for Health report today, which highlights trends impacting disability claims among its members, which consists of millions of Canadians.

The report says drug claims to treat mental disorders by adults aged 30 to 39 years also increased  13 per cent during the same time period.

Sun Life’s report shows 16 per cent of total drug claims for 2021 were specifically for mental health disorders, and over half of all disability claims for those under 44 years old were for mental health disorders.

While this data may appear alarming, it could also simply show an increase in awareness and discussion of mental health. The increase in claims could be a positive sign that Canadians are being proactive, reducing the stigma surrounding mental health disorders and reaching out for the help they need.

“Having open and supportive conversations around mental health is a critical first step. Research shows the severity and duration of mental disorders are reduced the sooner people access care,” Director of Mental Health Solutions at Sun Life Dr. Sam Mikail said in a news release. “When it comes to mental health treatment, there is no one-size-fits all approach.”

Mikail is urging Canadians to seek the help they need, whether that means working with your family doctor, a psychologist or going through your Employee Assistance Program at work.
