Michael Erickson, NDP

What separates you from the other candidates in your riding?

I have a 20-year history of volunteer service, often with a focus on youth, poverty and justice. I see being a candidate as an extension of this service. My opponents tend to either serve themselves or a very elite group of people.

What is the defining issue in your riding this election?

Over and over again, I hear people who are frustrated and exhausted with the way things have been done in Ottawa. Many folks are just able to make ends meet – they don’t have extra cash. They want to vote for someone they can trust to follow through on their commitments.

Do you believe the relationship between municipalities and the federal government needs to be redefined, and if so, how?

Absolutely – in terms of providing funds for capital and operational costs of infrastructure development. In Toronto, the most obvious example is the TTC. Canada is one of the few G20 countries that doesn’t provide significant and stable funding for urban transit. This must change.

Which of your party’s policies would make the biggest impact on Torontonians’ lives?

The NDP platform would immediately save people money without increasing taxes by introducing new standards to credit card rates, medication costs, and internet & cell phone fees.

Tell us something flattering about your main rival in this campaign.

If I had been able to afford it, I would have loved to take one of Professor Ignatieff’s classes.
