The above pictures should be enough to make Councillor Michael Walker’s head blow up.
Walker has drafted a motion condemning The People’s Republic of China for its treatment of Tibetan protestors and calling for a formal Canadian boycott of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He’ll present it to council on April 28, after Mayor David Miller returns from his current trade mission there.
For Walker, himself a supporter of Falun Gong, this is not the first time China has come up in council [PDF].
Miller, pictured with Guo Jinlong, who is the David Miller of Beijing, says cooperation and discussion are the best way to encourage improvements in China’s environmental policies, but has been relatively silent on the current human rights hysteria.
On balance, which act – Miller’s visit or Walker’s motion – will have more impact?
