TikTok is adjusting screen time features for teens and families.
TikTok is launching a new feature to try to limit the amount of time teens can spend daily on their app.
The popular video-sharing app is introducing automatic default settings for teen accounts and expanding Family Pairing parental controls.
To help teens better manage their time on the app, TikTok is rolling out a 60-minute daily screen time limit for users below 18 years of age, in the coming weeks. Once the hour limit is reached, minors will be prompted to enter a password to continue watching.
In the case that users disable the 60-minute feature, and spend over 100 minutes on the app per day, they’ll be asked to set a new daily limit. Teens will also be sent weekly inbox notifications that recaps their collected time on the app.
According to TikTok, new default features will require young users to “make an active decision” when extending their time scrolling through videos.
“While there’s no collectively-endorsed position on the ‘right’ amount of screen time or even the impact of screen time more broadly, we consulted the current academic research and experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital in choosing this limit,” TikTok said in a news release on Wednesday.

The video app is also expanding Family Pairing features, which include custom daily time limits, a screen time dashboard providing summaries, and daily breakdowns of the amount of time the app was used.
Advanced mute notifications and a sleep reminder will also be available in the weeks to follow.
The video sharing app tested new features over the course of a month and reports increased use of overall screen management tools by 234 per cent.
