What Toronto councillors should be earning by 2014, according to a 2009 consultant’s report. It says their salaries haven’t kept pace “to ensure competitive market position.” This week, councillors voted 39-to-three to forgo a cost-of-living increase. They earn $99,619 a year.

Heritage report card

Heritage Voices, a Heritage Toronto and Toronto Historical Association report set for release today (Thursday, February 10), highlights understaffing and lack of funding as the most pressing problems facing heritage services. The report also notes that heritage concerns are typically excluded from development decisions by the city’s planning department. The fate of our 11 cash-strapped museums is another worry. Nuclear payload

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has approved Bruce Power’s plan to ship 16 nuclear-waste-laced steam generators across the Great Lakes for “recycling” in Sweden. The CNSC calls safety concerns “negligible,” but 39 member communities of the Anishinabek Nation are accusing the federal agency of failing to consult native groups.


Reimagining Hearn

So what next for the Hearn Generating Station now that the stacked ice rink first planned for Commissioners may be headed its way? Will MacIvor, an architect with E.R.A. working on the Maple Leaf Gardens remake, reimagined the waterfront site for his masters thesis. His vision, sketched out here, features a mix of uses, as well as a courtyard, aqueduct, and the massive stack as a totem pole.
