INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

The annual march, Saturday, March 9, a couple of thousand strong, took over Bloor and then Yonge to highlight the brutality and indignities experienced by the world’s women, but also to celebrate the heartening rise of global feminism.

STOMPIN’ TOM’S FINAL CHORDS

We bid a sad farewell to Stompin’ Tom Connors, the people’s troubadour who believed Canada deserved tribute in song and cherished the notion that we are a country with a culture worth preserving. We salute his loyalty, his unyielding spirit and his folksy, unforgettable tunes. See Michael Hollett’s appreciation of the guitar and song man.

WHICH SCANDAL?

Hey, remember mere days ago how teachers and parents at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary were up in arms over coach Rob Ford’s characterization of their school as a gang-infested hellhole? Or the discovery that lobbying has exploded since the mayor took office? Doesn’t come to mind? How about this: Sarah Thomson’s allegation that Ford felt her rear end at a party on March 7? The City Hall news cycle has shrunk to just a few hours, so every scandal bumps the last one out of the public mind. At this point, Rob Ford news competing for space against non-Ford news would be a step up.

THEY DON’T KNOW JACK

On Sunday, March 10, CBC aired Jack, a much-hyped biopic about late NDP leader Jack Layton. If you tuned in midway through, however, you might have thought the network was airing Jack, the 1996 Francis Ford Coppola dramedy about a boy whose body ages at an accelerated pace. After the first few commercial breaks, our national broadcaster plastered the words “You’re watching Jack” on the screen – accompanied not by a mustachioed Rick Roberts but by an impish, backpack-sporting Robin Williams. This actually happened.

MONEY SCREAMS

MGM sure went for the big splash last weekend, taking centrefolds in the dailies to extravagantly outspend casino foes and pump their big-bucks gambling den – oh sorry, their “seamlessly integrated resort.” The ad’s pics promise delightful shorelines, green spaces and family-friendly fun. Not everyone was dazzled. Brian Ashton, president of the CNE, demanded MGM cease and desist absconding with official Ex imagery to promote its private business, including the graphic of the iconic Princes’ Gates. Get these hucksters outta town.

FREEDOM TREK

A sea of red, blue and gold flags paraded past China’s Consulate General on St. George and on to Yonge-Dundas Square as local Tibetans and supporters honoured the 54th anniversary of the 1959 uprising against the Chinese government, Sunday, March 9. Kunsang Tanzin of the Canadian Tibetan Association of Ontario told the crowd that liberation would be won through “strong but non-violent means.”

FEMINIST NUMBER CRUNCH

Percentage of seats on corporate boards filled by women in Canada, according to a TD Economics report. Nasty news in glass ceiling terms, but then again, maybe women have better things to do.

LETTUCE SHARE

Over a hundred Occupy Gardeners on Seedy Wednesday, March 6, invaded the foyer of City Hall for a guerrilla seed exchange (think pepper, thyme, dill, tomato, cucumber, etc), to diss corporate seed monopolies and promote local growing. Watch for renegade veggies breaking through the turf in a public space near you.
