Nuke Fix

WHAT Ontario Power Generation’s Deep Geologic Repository, aka nuclear waste dump, proposed for Kincardine, Ontario.

WHERE Deep underground but only 1.2 kilometres from the shores of Lake Huron – too close, environmentalists say, to the world’s largest freshwater source to make the dump safe.

WHY To store “low” and “intermediate level” nuclear waste in rock that OPG says is “seismically quiet.” Opponents, however, point out that some of the waste being proposed for dumping (about 10 per cent) will remain toxic or radioactive for 100,000 years.
