Burger King’s Bad deal

Three reasons why Canadians should be worried about Burger King’s takeover of Tim Hortons, according to NDP industry critic Peggy Nash:

1. Tims will be owned by Brazilian firm 3G Capital, which controls Burger King and has a reputation for aggressive cost-cutting and job-shedding.

2. The HarperCons have a terrible record when it comes to protecting Canadian interests in foreign takeovers.

3. Workers usually end up paying the price in big-money acquisitions.

Spotted

Responding to a series of early morning raids targeting migrant workers in the Jane and Finch area earlier this month, Jane Finch Action Against Poverty (JFAAP) held a demonstration on August 19. According to the group, the Canada Border Services Agency and OPP “racially profiled, forcefully ID’d and detained at least 21 people,” some of whom have already been deported. Video here.
