No election debate – Mel’s wish comes true

Rating: NNNNN

Great green hope Tooker Gomberg will debate Mayor Mel mano-a-mano anywhere, anytime.

But if you’re waiting for a feature fight, it ain’t going to happen. There’s no venue, and the champ won’t get in the ring.

Mel’s camp is blowing off Gomberg. His handlers say the mayor will only consider invites from community or business groups for all-candidates debates.

“We’re going to deal with organizations, not with individual candidates,” says Mel’s campaign manager, James Villeneuve.

The St. Lawrence Centre is the latest institution to decline to hold a debate. Apparently, 28 mayoral candidates in a cage match would just be too unruly. Instead, the forum invited Mel to attend what amounts to a sparring match with federal minister David Collenette on Wednesday (October 25). Mel can’t make it there either.

“It looks like they’re going to be stiffing us and stiffing the public,” says Gomberg.
