So there you have it folks. Google has made it official and we now have the answers to the long rumored gPhone. Well it's not really a gPhone, actually it's not even a phone that could be compared to the iPhone. Rather, Google is staying in the software realm and creating a software stack that mobile phone manufacturers can use.
The Google advantage over competitors such as Symbian and Windows Mobile is that the Goog intends on giving this all free to the manufacturers. The reasoning behind this should be clear to anyone who watches Google. The mobile frontier is a massive market space for Google to peddle their ads to and thus allow them to rake in billions more in ad revenue.
A pile of handset makers and carriers are already onboard to support the initiative. The mobile software is being called Android after the company they bought in 2005 at the start of this project. Expect to see phones start appearing with Google's software around the end of 2008.
