PAKISTAN’S GENDER GAP

How have religion, culture and colonialism shaped gender and sexuality in Pakistan? It’s a loaded question in a country that elects a female prime minister but tolerates violence against women. The subject gets frank treatment in a forum hosted by the Pakistan Development Fund. The group, founded at U of T in response to the 2010 flood that displaced millions in that country, aims to focus on Pakistan’s marginalized and to initiate change. Today (Thursday, June 27), 6:30 pm. $5. Noor Cultural Centre, 123 Wynford. noorculturalcentre.ca.

CAR-FREE MARKET MAYHEM

Kensington’s Pedestrian Sunday folks like to say their events “don’t permanently change the streets they forever change the way you perceive them!” The car-free happening that showcases the power of public spaces features music, communal board games, much sensational mingling and food specials galore. Few summer gatherings can beat it for people-watching and consciousness-raising. Sunday (June 30). Noon to 7 pm. Augusta and College. pskensington.ca.

A STITCH IN TIME

Help bring consumerism down a notch at the Clothing Repairathon. This recycling-happy volunteer sewing circle asks you to bring wearable items that need stitching – we’re talking rips, holes, missing buttons, whatever – and they will magically restore them to full usefulness. The DIY menders are also asking for volunteers and supplies. See them in Kensington at Pedestrian Sunday (June 30) from 1 to 5 pm. Free. repairathon.com.
