NOW editors pick a trio of this week’s can’t-miss events

MADIBA’S FREEDOM DAY

On July 18, the day he was born, the United Nations marks Nelson Mandela International Day For Freedom, Justice and Democracy, honouring the anti-apartheid leader’s contribution to reconciliation and conflict resolution. Participants are asked to devote 67 minutes, one for every year of his political activism, to helping others. In Toronto, an outdoor community fest features music by Liona Boyd, Lorraine Klaasen, Jabulani and others, plus sports activities and dance. Today (Thursday, July 18), from 1 to 5:30 pm. Free. Nelson Mandela Park Public School, 585 Dundas East. 416-393-1620.

KIDNEY CANCER RESEARCH

Thrill Of The Grill, an annual funder for Sunnybrook’s Odette Cancer Centre, happens Saturday (July 20). Five chefs from Danforth-area eateries are sharpening their knives to vie for the title of best barbecue ribs. Support cancer research, chow down on some carne and meet NOW’s new drinks writer, Sarah Parniak, while you’re at it. She joins chef Lynn Crawford on the judges’ panel. Noon to 4 pm. $15. Danforth from Broadview to Jackman. thedanforth.ca.

HONOUR MORGENTALER

If, like so many, you’ve been touched by the loss of pro-choice hero Henry Morgentaler, here’s a chance to join with others celebrating his life and legacy. The night of remembrances, Friday (July 19), is bound to be a tear-jerker as well as inspirational, and speakers will no doubt focus on the activist’s strength of character and boundless commitment to women’s right to choose. Donations are gratefully accepted for a scholarship in Morgentaler’s name. 7 pm. The Great Hall at Hart House, 7 Hart House Circle. ocac-choice.com.
