NOW Pitches a Tent

Rating: NNNNN

The literary love-in Word On The Street, now in its 17th year, is famous for two things: almost every author with a book in stores makes an appearance, and the weather always cooperates.

This year there’s a new component, a full slate programmed by NOW to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Here’s a taste of what you’ll get when you drop by our tent in the northwest section of Queen’s Park.

11 am The Theatre Hour: Reading As Performance, hosted by senior stage writer Jon Kaplan, presents Diane Flacks, d’bi.young and Yvette Nolan. No readings are as kick-ass as theatre artists sampling their own work
Noon In The Film Hour: From Page To Screen, associate entertainment editor Glenn Sumi talks to Barbara Gowdy, author of Falling Angels, and Tamara Faith Berger and Clement Virgo, who adapted Lie With Me for the screen, as they compare notes on the film adaptation process.
1 pm Dionne Brand (What We All Long For), Michael Redhill (Consolation) and Katrina Onstad (How Happy To Be) read from their work and talk about the pleasures and challenges of writing about our city in The Books Hour: Writing Toronto, hosted by books and entertainment editor Susan G. Cole.
2 pm The Music Hour: Rock ’N’ Writing, hosted by NOW music editor Sarah Liss, features Chris Eaton, Motion and more in a conversation about the difficulties musicians face when they decide to switch to the literary game.
3 pm Talk to Barrett Hooper, editor of NOW’s new Toronto: The Essential Guide To The Best Of The City, about our city’s hidden gems.
4 pm In Greening Toronto, NOW Ecoholic columnist Adria Vasil, Rick Smith of Environmental Defence, Green Tips author Gillian Deacon and Janet McCausland from the Green Toronto Awards discuss what’s working and what isn’t.
5 pm Ever wanted to tell NOW what you think of us? The NOW Forum: Have Your Say With NOW Editors, hosted by Lorraine Segato, gives you the chance. Direct your questions to NOW founders Michael Hollett and Alice Klein and editors Enzo DiMatteo and Susan G. Cole.
