There are 164 new COVID-19 cases in Ontario, marking a continued spike in new case numbers in the province after 166 new cases were added Saturday.

Three people died, bringing the total number of deaths in the province to 2,751.

The new cases constitute a 0.4 per cent rise in active cases, health minister Christine Elliott tweeted Sunday. There are now 48 more active COVID-19 cases in the province, bringing the total to 1,446.

The number of new COVID-19 cases in Ontario had largely remained below the 150 mark over the past several weeks.

The higher number of cases has been driven by renewed spread in Windsor-Essex and the Toronto area. Thirty-seven of the newest cases are from Windsor-Essex, with 48 from the Region of Peel.

Meanwhile, 28 out of 34 Ontario public health units are reporting five or fewer cases, with 15 of them reporting no new cases.

Most of Ontario has moved into stage 3 of the provincial reopening plan. Toronto, Windsor-Essex, Peel Region and Niagara are among the 10 areas that remain in stage 2.

COVID-19 hospitalizations and testing

Ontario processed nearly 27,000 tests yesterday, with Elliott saying that the province “continues to lead Canada in daily testing”.

Tests carried out over the past 24 hours had an 0.6 per cent positvity rate. Meanwhile, 18,000 additional test specimens were still under investigation on Sunday.

Hospital occupancy is still declining in Ontario, with 101 patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Thirty-four patients are being held in the ICU, and 23 patients are being ventilated.
