Ontario reports 251 new cases of COVID-19

New cases are down from Monday's spike, with major reductions in Toronto and Peel

Ontario reported 251 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, a significant drop from Monday’s increase of 313 cases.

Toronto and Peel Region saw the greatest change, with Toronto reporting 73 cases and Peel Region reporting 42 according to health minister Christine Elliott. That’s down from 112 in Toronto and 71 in Peel on Monday.

Ontario detected 313 new cases on Monday province-wide, marking the highest single-day increase since early June.

Labs in Ontario processed a little under 28,000 tests in the past 24 hours.

Four more people have died.

Recent case numbers have sparked concern over a “second wave” as cases have steadily increased since the beginning of September, with daily growth remaining higher than 200 since September 11.

Alon Vaisman, an infectious disease specialist at the University Health Network, says this resurgence in cases is happening a little earlier than he expected.

“Most people would think that would have taken a little bit longer, maybe in the winter time or later in the fall when the temperature drops and also when schools have resumed,” he says. “So a critical decision needs to be made with what to do with the numbers this week.”

Parents have been voicing concerns over the start of school as children in school boards across the province have returned back to school.

“Schools will always be one of the weakest points in a pandemic plan because of children and their inability to distance and the way a classroom is set up,” Vaisman says. “So the important thing is to make sure the prevalence in a community is low, because at least if you have cases they will be sporadic.

“If there are a lot of cases in the community, then it wouldn’t take much for that to light a fire inside of school and have an outbreak,” he adds.

There have been a total of 45,068 COVID-19 cases in Ontario to date, with 40,091 cases resolved and 2,820 deaths.
