Ontario reported 1,589 new cases of COVID-19 on November 23, breaking the provincial daily record once again.

The province saw 1,534 new cases on Sunday, a previous record of 1,588 on Saturday and 1,418 on Friday.

The Greater Toronto Area continues to lead the province in new cases.

“Locally, there are 535 new cases in Peel, 336 in Toronto and 205 in York Region,” Health Minister Christine Elliott said on Twitter.

Both Toronto and Peel Region entered lockdown on Monday, with York Region remaining in the red zone of Ontario’s COVID-19 warning framework.

Ontario currently has 13,004 active cases and 507 patients hospitalized, along with 156 patients in intensive care. Provincial public health officials have stated that once the province passes the 150 threshold for intensive care patients, the hospital system will be unable to accommodate all other non-emergent surgeries.

The province completed 37,471 tests in the past 24 hours, marking a 4.2 per cent positivity rate.

Of the 19 deaths reported today, 11 were among long-term care residents.

There are currently 101 long-term care homes in outbreak, 54 of which have resident cases and 23 with less than five cases in total, according to Minister of Long-term Care Merrilee Fullerton on Twitter.

School-aged children ages four to 17 account for 140 of all new cases reported today. Currently, 676 schools out of almost 5,000 across the province have a reported case, and three have closed due to an outbreak.

The province has seen a total of 105,501 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, including 88,992 resolved – up 1,484 from the day before.

There have been 3,505 deaths to date.
