Ontario reported 1,859 new cases of COVID-19 on December 5, another record-high increase.
The previous single-day record was 1,855 new infections on November 27.
Medical labs in the province completed 59,399 tests, also a record high. Ontario’s daily target for tests is 50,000. The provincial positivity rate is now 3.1 per cent.
Another 20 people have died. The virus has killed 3,757 people in Ontario since January.
The Greater Toronto Area continues to lead Ontario in new infections.
“Locally, there are 504 new cases in Toronto, 463 in Peel and 198 in York Region. There are 1,624 more resolved cases,” Health Minister Christine Elliott said on a Twitter.
There are now 709 people in hospital with COVID-19 in the province. Of those, 202 are in intensive care and 116 are on ventilators.
The province recorded 1,780 new cases on Friday, 1,824 on Thursday, 1,723 on Wednesday and 1,707 on Tuesday.
There are 107 long-term care homes experiencing outbreaks, down from 112 yesterday.
On Monday, the province will move Middlesex-London and Thunder Bay into the orange zone of the COVID-19 framework. Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge will move into the yellow zone.
Hamilton, which is in the red level, is introducing additional measures to restrict capacity in malls, retail stores and workplaces that take effect today.
Toronto and Peel Region are the only areas that are in lockdown.
