Good news for a retired Oshawa man who is now a multimillionaire after winning huge while playing the lottery.

Bernard White is a former railway employee who buys two lottery tickets every week: one for him, and one for his daughter. The morning of Feb. 22, she knocked on his bedroom door to wake Bernard up and tell him he had won $40,000 on a LOTTO MAX ticket.

But his lottery winnings were actually 1,000 times more than his daughter originally thought.

“Five or ten minutes later, there was another knock on the door and my daughter said, ‘Um…Dad, I think you won $40 million!’ Now I really wanted to jump out of bed,” White told the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission (OLG).

“But I couldn’t because I sleep in the nude. I would’ve hit the ceiling if I’d had underwear on!”

After his daughter returned home from work, the duo went to the store where he’d purchased the ticket, a Shell gas station on Taunton Road East in Oshawa.

“We checked it at the lottery terminal, and it lit up like a Christmas tree!” he told OLG.

White is an avid fisherman who loves music. He told the OLG that he plans to buy himself a new fishing rod and a set of pricey speakers. He plans to travel, including taking a cruise around his home province of Newfoundland. However, he also has some wholesome plans for the rest of his money.

“My daughter means a lot to me because when my late wife and I had her, she was the only child we could have,” he told OLG. “She’s going to be well taken care of.”

He shared that he has long dreamed of winning big, and using the money to take care of his family, which consists of many siblings and other family members.

“It’s going to be a wonderful feeling to help them. I’ll be the favourite uncle for sure!”

He also has plans to support some health-care organizations that are close to his heart by making substantial donations.
