at a hastily called press confer-ence last week, a tired but relieved Ching Zhu thanked Canadians for her freedom from detention in China. The 35-year-old Concordia student and Falun Gong practitioner was taken into custody upon returning to China to visit her ailing mother. Ching Zhu expressed her gratitude to the 80,000 Canadians who signed petitions and joined letter-writing campaigns in support of the Falun Gong detainees.
She described her month-long confinement in a bare, windowless room lit by a single bulb. "Every minute there were three people watching me, one man and two women. Even during the night they sat in my room monitoring me. They once commented on my sleeping positions."
