For the Tories, handguns are already banned, the same way cars are banned - unless you have a licence.
Says Lynn Meahan from the Conservative press office, "Handguns have been effectively banned for all but legitimate licensed purposes, like employment reasons and legitimate target shooting and for approved licensed collectors.'' Uh-huh.
They want to "scale back the bureaucratic burden of the current gun registry in consultation with hunters, First Nations, gun collectors and sportsmen".
Oh, damn. And what about handguns? "We will introduce balanced and fair measures to eventually ban handguns and semi-automatic firearms," reads a Green party press statement.
NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY
No equivocation here.
The party supports an "absolute ban" on handgun possession in cities and is pushing the idea of a Canada-U.S. summit of lawmakers to deal with gun smuggling.
Paul Martin was for an outright ban, but Stéphane Dion's media people don't return calls. Dion's speech at Dawson College, recently, promised to "get military assault weapons off our streets" and "ensure semi-automatic rifles with a legitimate connection to hunting or sport shooting are not included in the prohibition."
Too bad the gun used at Dawson College was a legit semi-auto Beretta often used for sport shooting.
