Pinheaded Reaction

I’ve been taping the occasional news spots for CHCH in the bowels of the Legislative Building at Queen’s Park but i never got shit like the kind given to me last time by the security guard.

I wear a pin on my jacket with the word COEXIST printed out so each letter is a symbol: The C is the symbol for the arabic nations, the O is a peace sign, the e combines the signs for male and female, the X is a star of David, the I a first nations symbol, the S the symbol for yin and yang the T a Christian cross.

Cool. eh?

But no. The security guard peers at the button.

“You’ll have to take that off,” he tells me. “Everyone in the building must appear to be neutral. No one can be seen to be politically partisan.”

“Uh, it says Coexist. It’s the most inclusive and embracing button on the planet. It favours no one.”

“You’ll have to take it off.”

So I did.

But I was mad.
