Sony's getting down - to $499 for the 80GB model of the PS3. The new 40GB will be available for $399 in November. It's a good move, and long awaited.
So now that the shiny PS3 has come within budget, let me tell you about some Playstation holiday event sights that took place last week.
My ten minutes of Heavenly Sword was quite fun. As Ian can attest, something about the epic one-swing-kills-all style of play is vastly appealing. Not to mention some literally ball-breaking moves.
However, I kept getting distracted by the game next to me - Folklore. Being someone who reads Fables and is well versed in the original Grimm's fairytales, I was intrigued. I got a survival horror feel mixed in with Final Fantasy. Totally not the case, (though somone should do that!), but Ian showed me the capture-and-use-creature power and I got to check the intro out to where you do some character selection, (playable as both a female and male lead).
Not far from Heavenly Sword, I sat down to play a round of Eye Of Judgment without actual instruction, aside from what Penny Arcade has taught me. Luckily, Magic: The Gathering is part of my nerd-fu repertoire, so despite not knowing that the goal of the game was to capture 5 of 9 squares, I still managed to win. I can see this being really fun for casual players. Animations are neat to watch manifest after you play your card, (feels almost like an acutal summon!), but after the nth time you may not think so. More play-testing required!
For those not fully nerded, SingStar for PS3 is due to launch next month. While belting out Cardigans' Lovefool, you can take some video and photos to relive the moment. Borrowing from the popular iTunes model, you'll be able to download new tracks in addition to the ones offered on the game disc. I'm told there will be other neat sharing and community features in the future, so keep an eye out for the ability to share your rockstar moments.
Devil May Cry 4 is slated for 2008, so you Dante fans will have to wait. There is some quality time I need to spend with some dancing demons mocking me from the car-tops of a street below.
Not feeling the urge to be tethered? The new PSP Slim is out, and for the salivating leigons of Star Wars fans, the white - with Vader decal - awaits. Significantly lighter than its predecessor, the PSP slim is all kinds of cool. Makes me want to replace my clunky black PSP, but I can't justify it. Anyone wanna buy one from me?
The white PSP Slim comes with Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron, which played like an FPS. And like in many FPS', I died a quick and abject death. Button mashing did not save me this time.
There are plenty of titles Ian, Rick and I have our eye on, so look for our reviews in the upcoming Holiday Guides starting late Nov.
