More than 50 Canadian university profs have signed a letter condemning the arrests of 1,000 students at the national university in Mexico City on charges of treason and terrorism.
The letter, drafted by U of T sociology professor Richard Roman, condemns the Mexican government for “unleashing a reign of judicial terror” against students who were striking to protest the government’s privatization plans.
“This represents a big step backwards,” says Roman.
Mexican embassy spokesperson Alfonso Nieto says it was students who didn’t want to dialogue with the university and ignored a vote to end the strike.
