Q+A Bonnie Meacham

Rating: NNNNN

THE EVENT

The Clothing Show Vintage, new designer fashions, accessories and more. Saturday (September 16), 11 am-8 pm, Sunday (September 17), 11 am-6 pm. $10, adv $8. Automotive Bldg, Exhibition Place. www.theclothingshow. com.

WHO? Bonnie Meacham, producer of the Clothing Show

WHAT? 300 exhibitors – 99 per cent of them Canadian – selling their styles at sale prices. New designers use the show as a launching pad.

SECRET TO THE SHOW’S POPULARITY? “It’s because of the sales. Plus, you won’t see all of this merchandise in one place anywhere else, and you get to meet the person who sewed the piece.”

WHAT’S NEW THIS YEAR? “We have more men’s clothing. It used to be all about T-shirts, but now we have lots of detourning – reworked suits with silkscreens and drawings on them.”

IS THE SHOW LOSING ITS VINTAGE COMPONENT? “Never.”

IS THERE ANYTHING FOR ME IF I’M A DOUBLE-DIGIT SIZE? “Check out Stop Staring. They have a great plus-size line.”

WHAT ARE YOU WEARING RIGHT NOW? “I have on a vintage smock with amoebas on it. It’s purple, blue and chartreuse. All I have to do is fumble with the zipper and I’m good to go.”

DO YOU EVER GO TO A CHAIN STORE? “I’ll go into H&M. The designs have European flair and the retailer picks up new labels every year.”

FAVOURITE ACCESSORY? “I have a purse problem. I think I have about 150.”

GUILTY SCHLEPPY PLEASURE? “I still wear a pair of socks I bought when I was a 10-year-old Bay City Rollers fan. They have a Union Jack on them and a picture of lead singer Eric.”
