The event: SUPPORT AND CELEBRATE BILLY BRYANS Amanda Martinez, Molly Johnston, Luis Mario Ochoa, Parachute Club and others perform in a fundraiser for musician and DJ Bryans. Sunday (August 20), 8 pm. $20. Lula Lounge, 1585 Dundas West. 416-588-0307.
Who: Chendy Leon, percussionist and musical coordinator of Support And Celebrate Billy Bryans.
What: A benefit in support of drummer and DJ Billy Bryans, founder of the Parachute Club, drummer for groups including Lillian Allen and the AfroNubians, organizer for Mundial Music Pool, Juno winner for best world music recording for The Gathering and resident Lula Lounge DJ. Bryans is currently recovering from lung cancer surgery.
Why: "Billy's a good friend and he needed help from his friends. He's unable to work and will be for a while."
How did people react when you asked them to participate? "They immediately said, I'm in.' Everybody respects and loves Billy."
What can people expect from this event? "They'll hear every kind of music produced in Toronto. Amanda Martinez gives us Mexican styles, Luis Mario Ochoa's great songs come out of Venezuela and Brazil, Parachute Club covers rock and pop. I'll be playing drums for the band - usually Billy plays and I play percussion. And there are African artists like Madagascar Slim on the bill, too."
What makes Bryans special? "His heart belongs to the earth. He appreciates music and culture from all over the world. He has no frontier."
Favourite Parachute Club song? "Rise Up, because of its message. It's a wise song asking us to wake up and demand our rights. It has all the ingredients - melody, lyrics, a chorus people can sing along with - plus people go nuts when they hear it."
Favourite drummer? "My dad. You can hear him playing in a traditional Cuban band every Friday night at Cervejaria."
