Revenge of the mashup

Remember music mashups? They rose to web fame circa 2005 and have lost a bit of prominence since. But they never went away, they just slid into the underground. But once in awhile, a mashup makes its way back to meme status.

Thriftshop XL has dropped one such mashup hit, remixing LL Cool J’s Momma Said Knock You Out with Come On Eileen by Dexy’s Midnight Runners. You can’t help but look at both tracks in a new way, as if the songs by themselves now feel naked. Thriftshop knows his timing – a skill he honed in the Nirvana-Rick Astley mashup – and lets the beats from the hiphop groove flow smoothly with the synthesized strings in Eileen. The videos even sync up nicely.

If there’s any mashup genius to watch for, it’s Thriftshop. He’s remixed songs more than 60 mashups, and his YouTube page boasts more than 4,000 subscribers. For good reason: he doesn’t just take pop songs and segue them into other pop songs he borrows from classics (Young MC) and modern bands (Franz Ferdinand) to create entirely new art.

Fans of Rip! A Remix Manifesto should be proud.
