Smallville gets big boost

Heroes might be getting all the hooplah and why not? it’s blended superheroes and serial mysteries into a compellingly cool series – but it turns out there’s still a little up, up and away left in Superman’s cape.

Checked out Sunday night’s ep of Smallville, the second one I’ve watched this season (the other being the kinda great, kinda gay – hello Aquaman – Justice League ep). And I have to admit it was one of the best yet. It felt like a season finale episode: Lana’s about to marry Lex when she discovers Clark’s secret and just when they’re about to run away together Lionel Luthor blackmails her into walking down the aisle anyway, leaving Clark to watch teary-eyed from the back of the church.

Sure, there was little in the way of superheroics (a burst of superspeed and some heat vision used to weld shut a door Clark had ripped off its hinges), but that stuff was always the least interesting (especially since small-screen budgets mean the effects are always kind of hokey). What the show offered was good soapy drama with Lana’s revelation about Clark’s powers, something she clearly should have seen in any of the dozens of times he’s rescued her in the past, and her going through with the marriage to Lex as the capper.

I just don’t know where they can go from here. Does Clark put Lana behind him once and for all, which would finally put Lois Lane front and centre, or does he fight Lex for her? what do you think?
