Soccer punch

“In Division 1 women’s soccer, it gets a lot more physical than people expect.” That’s a statement you don’t hear everyday. But women’s soccer has been getting the wrong kind of attention recently, thanks to some very foul play by University of New Mexico junior defender Elizabeth Lambert.

In a video making the rounds on YouTube, Lambert is caught punching her forearm into the back of a BYU opponent and then later yanking the ponytail of another defender. It’s obvious the attacks were premeditated, it wasn’t like Lambert was falling down and had to pull a ponytail to regain balance. She displayed the kind of ugly behaviour reserved for NHL enforcers and Ron Artest.

Lambert has been suspended indefinitely and she issued an apology, saying: “My actions were uncalled for. I let my emotions get the best of me in a heated situation. I take full responsibility for my actions and accept any punishment felt necessary from the coaching staff and UNM administration.”

We seem to remember similar crocodile tears from the likes of Michael Vick, Mike Tyson and Jon McEnroe. These poor role models are caught on video and later apologize, but are they sincere? Do you think Lambert should face more than a suspension from division 1 women’s soccer? [rssbreak]
