Squat on fire watch

Rating: NNNNN

Remember the pope squat? the Tories do. It was quite a black eye for them when the rabble managed to build housing on shorter notice than the government ever has, and the Tories are still paying for it. Actually, we are. Since the eviction last fall, private security has been posted at 1510 King West, originally on a “fire watch” ordered by the fire marshall. Brendan Crawley of the attorney general’s office says the watch is still in effect. As we know, fires are sneaky, and patient. Vigilance is required.

Frankly, I expected the explanation to have changed. There must have been some new development to justify it all – radiation, perhaps, or pirates. Maybe the house eats people. At the very least I’d have thought the government had had ample time to update its doublespeak.

But the official story remains, even though Fire Chief Jack Collins says his office has ended its involvement with the property, and the security company hired by the fire marshall’s office, Intelligarde, has been replaced by DC Security, on the payroll of the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee.

The Tories’ priorities remain as well. Spending tens of thousands of your dollars protecting the houseless from a house is considered a good investment.
