We all have our reasons for taking pot odours seriously. Maybe you take pride in your impeccable hygiene. Or you don’t want your boss wondering why you smell like a skunk.
With the many advantages of a pot-friendly lifestyle comes the responsibility for respecting the olfactory organs of others. With that objective in mind, here are seven ways to stay stink-free, whether you’re smoking, baking or vaping.
1. First things first: store it right
Don’t keep your stash in a wadded-up sandwich bag in the breast pocket of your jean jacket. Use an airtight container. Add a sachet of lavender or cedar chips to your cargo pocket. Sprinkle the lining of your moto jacket with odour-absorbing baking soda.
2. Deodorize your clothes
If you need to de-stink your favourite smoking jacket or the hammock you’ve been blazing in all summer, adding a cup of vinegar or a cup of baking soda (not both) to the wash does the trick. It’ll make your clothes softer, too. In a pinch, putting your smelly jeans in the freezer for a cou-ple of hours will eliminate baddies lingering in the fabric.
3. Change the way you smoke
We all love the ritual of rolling our own and the instantaneous hit from smoking, but these days you should consider vaping. Vapour is about a third as odorous as smoke, and because it’s less dense it dissipates more quickly.
4. Make stink-free edibles and drinks instead
Eating a pot brownie or sipping a cannabis cocktail is definitely less smelly than smoking or vaping. Load up on edibles and infusions next time you’re stocking your stash. Or, using craft glue, construct a small inukshuk out of vanilla wafers. Sit it on your shoulder and ask it questions, nodding at its thoughtful responses. Now that pot smell is the least of anyone’s concerns!
5. De-stink your de-carb
Home cooks know that to cook with pot it must first be de-carbed, a process that can really stink up the place. Rather than wrapping yours in foil and baking it at 115°C for about half an hour or so, you can stick your weed in a tightly sealed Mason jar and simmer it in 120°C water for 90 minutes. A candy thermometer is handy to keep an eye on the gentle simmer. After it’s cooled, open the jar outside to let the fumes out. Then bake away!
6. Cover the odour the right way
If you’re smoking in the bathroom, then dousing yourself with body spray, you are fooling no one – and also you probably smell extra-terrible. Avoid masking the smell; get rid of it with Ozium, OdoBan or Va-por-tek. Or spritz yourself with vinegar. Now you smell like vinegar, not weed! The vinegar smell is short-lived, but vinegar’s smell-attacking properties will persist.
7. Ask someone you trust
Find a confidant(e) whom you can ask that most personal question, “Hey, do I smell?” The effects of weed can leave you either so relaxed that you don’t care how you smell or so paranoid about your aroma that you think everyone’s in on your secret and can maybe even read your thoughts. Identifying a trusted individual to check in with – before you get high – can make everything more pleasant. If your buddy says you stink, go wash your hands and brush your teeth. And next time, try a different stink-reducing routine.
