Super Smash Bros. Brawl Preview

Nintendo gives us Toronto reviewers a hands-on look at the new Smash Brothers games to drop in stores March 8th. I am looking forward to spending some alone time with it. http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1430551047http://www.brightcove.com/channel.jsp?channel=1417400167

Oh yeah. It’s on its way. While I’d argue that the next Mario Kart is of more interest, Super Smash Bros. Brawl has had Nintendo fans slobbering all over themselves. Myself included. So here’s the info on what I got to play last week during a hands-on demo led by Nintendo of Canada spokesperson, Matt Ryan.

Captured on video is one of my fave levels that we got to play – Wario Ware. The innovation in level design on that one is at once hilarious for those who know the game and fascinating for everyone else to try and comprehend. The pictochat level (not video’d) would have trumped Wario had we been able to send our drawings from the DS to battle on. Alas, it was not meant to be.

Don’t know about you, but I’ve dusted off my Wavebirds in preparation. In addition to that old school option, you’ve got your choice of the classic controller. But if you’re wiimote/nunchuck only, don’t worry – it’s fairly straight-forward. However, I only did my best version of button mashing when I got a chance to drive. Finesse wasn’t part of it.

Completionists beware – you’ll be at this a while between all the various characters, suits, and upgrades you’ll need to collect for that 100%. Another thing of note is the character unlocking system. Not only is there a numeric threshold, you also need to do battle and defeat said character to be able to have them appear as an option on the select screen. Nothing mind-blowing, but a nice twist.

While the JP version has been out a month now, we in North Ameridca still gotta wait until the first week in March goes by. I’d cry, but my sympathies are with the Eurokids across the pond. Eventually though, we’ll get to duke it out online. We’ll just have a bit of a head start on them.

So besides the regular online battle options, introduced is the ability to take a screenshot from any angle. So here’s hoping that the internet will not get a proliferation of teabagging Yoshii. I know, it’s a lot to ask. I hear the single player mode is a bit repetitious, but all in all, I liked the co-op from what I saw.
