Surreal Flash game getting Net love

Remember when Flash games failed to deliver lush graphics and intriguing storytelling? That was the 90s. Today, PC gamers are lucky to enjoy a variety of indie video games, and a recent Flash newbie is winning big buzz across the blogosphere.

Coma is one of the most beautiful Flash games I’ve ever played. About a boy trying to “find his way through his mysterious and subconscious world,” as the designer Thomas Brush describes it, Coma uses simple storylines and even easier controls to help you maneuver this strange boy through left-to-right scrolling levels. All you need are three buttons – left, right and up arrow keys. So basic even your grandfather could play it.

What makes this game stand apart from the rest is its art direction. A shadowy house leads you to back fields where the grass wavers gently, where a bird in a cage begs for freedom. It all feels like a surreal dream, like something Guillermo del Toro would create.

The game should take you 30 minutes max to complete, but Coma isn’t about challenging your gaming stamina. In fact, as a bite-sized game, it works almost as a short film about this weird world, even if you might be left with more questions than answers after the anticlimactic ending. It might not be the most satisfying game out there, but Coma prides itself on pretty scenery and cute characters. Hopefully, we’ll see more from the game’s author in years ahead.[rssbreak]
