Tart trustee tongues headed for new board

Rating: NNNNN

Education

If all goes well, it’s possible that progressives will grab 10 and perhaps even 12 spots on the 22-member board of ed in November’s municipal runoff.

Fortunately, some clear heads are running again, namely Irene Atkinson in Parkdale-High Park, Liz Hill of York South-Weston, and Stephnie Payne of York West.

In Don Valley East, progressive Liberal Shelley Carroll is up against incumbent Doug Stephens, and the smart money says Stephens is toast. In Broadview-Greenwood, Lilein Schaeffer is stepping down and Paula Fletcher will take her spot on the Jack Layton ticket.

Two strong new candidates also look like shoo-ins. Former vice-chair of the board Sheila Cary Meagher is making a bid in Beaches-East York, and Coleen Gardhouse, past president of Toronto’s OSSTF, looks unstoppable in Scarborough Centre.
