I'm not a huge FPS fan. I don't like Halo and lost interest quickly in Doom 3 and Halflife 2. It's not that I don't appreciate the games I just can't sustain interest in the genre. I think Wolfenstein and Duke Nukem are the only ones I ever finished. Now that I have my bias well established let's get on with the review.
Shadowrun came across my desk in both 360 and PC form. I can't give the PC version a try since it requires Vista which I don't have and don't intend to have for some time. So I popped the 360 version into the console and gave that a try. Initially I was captivated by the concept, it's like an FPS got mashed up with a bit of fantasy, not something you see very often. Elves running around with SMG's casting trees of life and teleport? Ok I'm intrigued.
There are six short chapters to play through that consist of tutorials and a bot match to apply your skills. You can play solo in AI driven bot matches, but AI is used losely here. There is no campaign. Game play is really only meant to take place online and I'm fine with that, these games really get intense when you're pitted against the intelligence and stupidity of fellow humans.
Online play is definitely fun, teams of eight play various types of games on a handful of maps and overall the experience is pretty decent. Can take a while to master aiming, shooting, running and casting all at the same time but definitely makes for something more than a run and gun event.
Alas, I can only handle so much of the same thing. The online matches can grow old quickly and the teams are filled with the usual suspects you'd expect to find on Xbox Live in a new FPS. The magic and the tech kind of feel like they took every exploit or cheat someone has made for an FPS and made that part of the gameplay (flying, teleporting through walls).
Shadowrun is no Halo and it's lack of polish in certain areas, such as no animations for ladder climbing and a limited number of maps make bring it down a few notches. Still, for someone looking for a different spin on the FPS genre or in need of a quick fix until Halo 3 is out, this could do the trick.
