Trudeaus to-do list

Electoral reform

Will the 2015 election be the last conducted under the first-past-the-post system? The Liberal policy book says it will be. The Grits have pledged to convene an all-party committee to review a number of options ranked ballots, proportional representation and mandatory and online voting and make recommendations to Parliament in 18 months. Tick. Tick.

Climate change-up

Trudeau is for Keystone XL, has been noncommittal on Energy East but opposes Northern Gateway. Hes making big promises on the environment: a pan-Canadian framework for combatting climate change within 90 days of the Paris climate change talks in December, a price on carbon and phasing out subsidies to the fossil fuel industry in the medium term. Murdered and missing indigenous women and girls

The Liberals promised in their policy book to launch a public inquiry immediately into the disappearance and murder of more than 1,200 native women and girls. The PM-designate said at his press conference Tuesday that he would move quickly on the issue. The party has also committed to repealing the HarperCons anti-sex-worker law.

Legalize it

The Grits are pledging to legalize, regulate and restrict access to marijuana. And they have just the guy to sell it Bill Blair. Hes for it. Cuz current laws are a giant waste of time and money a cop is busting someone for simple possession every nine minutes. The twist: while the Libs will remove consumption and possession from the Criminal Code, they plan to stiffen penalties for those who sell weed to minors and drive under the influence.

C-51

Libs say they will repeal the Cons anti-terror law and replace it with new legislation that better balances our national security with rights and freedoms. They say they will require a review of the new law every three years, as well as establish an all-party committee to oversee national security issues.
