The Real Crystal Castles?

The mysterious Toronto duo Crystal Castles became a degree less mysterious with the unearthing of band member Ethan Kath’s slightly embarrassing musical past.

It turns out Kath, currently one half of Crystal Castles, was not-so-long-ago the evil genius behind this band, a hardcore metal outfit once banned around Toronto for riotous shows.

In the band, Kath went by the name Ethan Deth, and wore studded belts (pictured).

The revelation about his metal past comes from the blog HIPSTERRUNOFF, where the official backlash has been cued. (One assumes grammar and spelling are incorrect on the site for reasons ironic.)

“Do u feel like Crystal Castles lied 2 u as they built their cryptic brand?” writes Carles, the architect of this little expose.

“Is ETHAN DETH hiding his past from us on purpose? Do u think that’s why he always hides his face?”

The post digs up even further controversy, when, in the comments section, the background on a tiff about album artwork emerges. Essentially, it’s alleged that the band used artwork without proper permissions.

That issue – however lively – is never as colourful as the disclosure of Kath’s work in Kill Cheerleader, and the questions therein: Are Crystal Castles hiding their history? Would this have surfaced if the band had not been so deliberately oblique?

And, even so, will anyone care?Because, as HIPSTERRUNOFF frames it, “basically every one used to be a weiner.”
