The story behind this week’s Kensington Market cover

For this week’s cover package about Kensington Market (which will appear online soon!), NOW art director Michelle Wong decided to try something we don’t do very often – commission an illustrating team to visually transport our readers to the beloved neighbourhood.

She turned to Clayton Hanmer, who works in our production department, and his team Trio Magnus – translation: “The Great Three in Latin, tongue-in-cheek, of course,” Hanmer says – which also includes Aaron Leighton and Steve Wilson.

Trio Magnus works out of a studio in the Market, and their mantra is, “No Planning.”

“We never pencil anything out ahead of time because we believe in the spontaneity of just going for it,” he says. “It’s like a party: if you plan it out, it’ll suck.”

So the three hit the streets of Kensington, sketching what they saw – which, as you can see, was a lot. You’ll want to pick up a copy of the mag to spend some time poring over the wonderful, familiar details – from steaks at Sanagan’s to the famous Garden Car and beyond.

Wondering if the gang hid anything in the piece à la Disney?

“Naturally there’s loads of pro-Trump subtext. Apart from that, we’ve included in-joke references to some of the local regulars.”
