Annie Proulx The Pulitzer Prize winner (The Shipping News) comes to Harbourfront Centre with her new book, Barkskins, an epic family saga spanning 300 years. Two young Frenchmen in 17th-century New France can only leave the employ of their demanding boss after they clear a huge forest so he can build a house. The two then develop completely different relationships to the land, one wanting to honour it, the other to conquer it. Most of their descendants have to live with the damage done to it. Throughout the mammoth narrative arc, Proulx demonstrates her immense skill in developing character and her deep passion for the environment. She talks to Jared Bland about the book and her career.
