You’ve heard about this upcoming Bruce McDonald flick featuring Broken Social Scene concert footage. You might have seen McDonald filming scenes around Toronto. But what about the trailer?
We got you covered. Below is the recently released trailer for This Movie is Broken, due out June 25.
McDonald is returning to his rock roots (Hard Core Logo) with a simple story about a guy in love with a girl, only able to spend one night with her before she goes to Paris to see her parents (forever? For a week? We’re not sure). The film-as-24-hours premise sounds familiar to fans of Last Night, written by Don McKellar, who also penned the script for this so-called “rock show romance.”
The cast stars Georgina Reilly, best known recently for her short-lived role as the radio techie in McDonald’s previous film Pontypool. Playing the romantic fella is relative unknown Greg Calderone, best known for his five episodes in Howie Do It.
The trailer’s last half shows a wild collage of concert footage from BSS, but don’t think McDonald filmed the band in one setting. In fact, the scenes are crowd-sourced from fans who submitted their own footage of BSS concerts (Feist included). You can even tell from the trailer that some scenes take place at Harbourfront’s outdoor stages, some take place indoors
The best parts of the trailer are the scenes you don’t see. Like any good sneak peek, it leaves much to the imagination. The trailer left out meaningful exchanges between the couple, so you mainly hear BSS music behind clips of Toronto adventurism. Smart move by not giving us too much of McKellar’s script to love or hate.
