Toronto wins gold in Tory workfare event

OK, so there wasn’t exactly dancing in the streets when Tory social services minister John Baird turned up at City Hall last week to “reward” Toronto with a cheque for $622,000.

No, it wasn’t another loan to offset downloading. Apparently, the city exceeded the Tories’ wildest dreams when it came to forcing people to work for their welfare cheques. Of the 67,686 people faced with mandatory requirements in order to receive welfare, the city had to have at least 15 per cent in placement programs.

Hats off to our city bureaucrats, who put in a gold-medal performance, going the distance and putting 10,776 folks out to forced labour. Councillor Olivia Chow says Tory workfare will affect thousands of children who need daycare when their parents are put to work.

What a town. Kind of makes you all warm and fuzzy inside, doesn’t it? SA
